I've already professed my fondness for the video work of Rich Juzwiak. His newest "supercut" is No Signal, which gives just a taste of how often the broken or useless cellular phone shows up in recent horror movies.
When I was a kid the reigning horror cliche of something we count on breaking down and not getting us out of the jam was the car that wouldn't start. I think it's telling that we've moved our fetish and our identity from the car to the cell phone. We are still obsessed with the idea of being "mobile" but what that means is different. The car gives us armor, a private space and a sense of freedom. The cell phone means we carry the whole world in our pocket but it can be a terribly fragile connection.
